One of the primary goals of the Tri-Cities Triathlon Club is to create of community of athletes that can train together. Training is always more enjoyable with other folks.

Triathlon
During the warmer months, the Tri-Cities Triathlon Club usually sponsors practice triathlons. These are informal, noncompetitive events, where participants can workout, practice their transitions, try out new gear, and socialize. These have been typically held at Warriors Path State Park on Sunday mornings. Check the discussion forum for dates and times. NOTE: these events will be open only to TCTC members.

Swimming
Open water swims are available during the summer months. These are not club-sponsored events, so anyone can join in. These swims, which are organized week-to-week by various individuals, generally occur at one of two venues listed below. Check the discussion forum or calendar for dates and times.

  • Warriors Path State Park. The usual swim route starts near the parking lot on Duck Island and follows a loop of varying length, up to about 1 mile. This is a protected inlet on the lake, so waves and boat wakes are rarely a problem. Click here for a map.

  • Watauga Lake. The swim begins at the boat ramp near the dam and generally heads straight across the lake to the opposite shore, and back. The distance is about 1200 meters one way. Because the swim route crosses the main body of the lake, waves and wakes can be an issue. Often, swimmers will organize a small flotilla of kayaks and canoes to escort them across. Click here for a map.

As for indoor swimming, there are several swimming pools in the Tri-Cities where athletes can train on their own. For a organized workout, the Masters Swim Team in Johnson City meets three mornings a week. Contact Coach Chris Corragio for more information. Check out our webpage with information of interest to Masters swimmers.

Biking
Group rides, of varying distance and difficulty, occur on most weekends. These are not club-sponsored events, so anyone can join in. The rides will be announced on the Tri-Cities Triathlon Club discussion forum and/or the Tri-Cities Road Club discussion forum.

The Tri-Cities Road Club is a large, well-organized group of cycling enthusiasts. In addition to announcements of weekend group rides, their website lists details regarding the regular Tuesday- and Thursday-night rides. They also maintain a comprehensive list of cue sheets for area rides. In Kingsport, the Kingsport Bicycle Association posts a calendar of group rides and an extensive list of cue sheets.

Running
The State of Franklin Track Club serves the entire Tri-Cities area. They maintain a comprehensive calendar of upcoming training and competitive events. They also host a discussion forum where group runs are announced. The FootRx store in Johnson City sponsors a group run on Thursday evenings. Check with them for details.

Coaching
SoleMates, the benefit organization for Girls on the Run, is again offering a triathlon coaching program this year.

SELF-MYOFASCIAL RELEASE TECHNIQUES
At our December 2009 club meeting, personal trainer Kim Bishop was a guest speaker. She spoke about training recovery and injury prevention, highlighting the use of an inexpensive foam roller to perforrm self-massage, or self-myofascial release. A summary of the technique can be found here.
